Overview of recruiting with EconJobMarket

Create your ad

  1. You can write and edit the text of your ad using the built-in editor on our ad-creation page. Alternatively, you can create your ad in your favorite editor, and then paste it into the form. Many recruiters use Microsoft Word to create their ads. The resulting ads usually look awful, but don't worry: when you confirm your ad our system will fix all the problems that Word creates and produce a good-looking ad.
  2. When you create your ad, choose the option to collect applications on EconJobMarket, so that you can take advantage of our full-featured application-management system, which includes a rating component that allows you to design your own rating schemes. Whether or not you collect applications on EconJobMarket, you can use our sophisticated interview scheduler when you have selected applicants for further evaluation.
  3. Your application form can require, or simply allow, applicants to upload files of your choosing, and you can design questions that you can require, or allows, them to answer. Some questions can be designated as "restricted", meaning that the applicants' answers will be visible only to Managers, not Reviewers. (You can use such questions to ask about the applicants' personal characteristics, for example, if you are required to collect such information by your institution.)
  4. You have the option to add a message, with an optional URL, that will be shown to applicants when their applications are complete. That allows you to point them to complete a survey or other form associated with your institution when they submit their application.

Solicit applications

Depending on the type of job you are advertising, you may want to ask the Placement Officers at various institutions about which of their job candidates are particularly suited to the job you are advertising. You can record the Placement Officers' responses, so that they are visible to your Reviewers and/or Managers when evaluating applications.

You can record the candidates whom the Placement Officers recommend by clicking on the Solicit applications button for the position on you main recruiter page. The system will then classify them as "priority" candidates when they apply, and you can add notes visible to Managers and/or Reviewers. (If your organization has a Placement Officer who is not on our list, you can add them.)

If you find applicants who seem particularly suited to your position, you can classify them as "Under review (priority)", so all your reviewers know who they are.

Evaluate applications

You can add as many Reviewers as you like for your organization. To do so, click the Users link in the horizontal menu and then the Add users button.

The EconJobMarket system includes a comprehensive application-evaluation subsystem that allows you to assign reviewers to applications and to design various types of rating schemes for applications. See our guides to assigning reviewers and to evaluating applications for the details.

Schedule interviews

When you have decided which applicants you would like to interview, you can select them, create a bunch of interview slots, and invite each applicant to choose a slot. See our guide to scheduling interviews. (The interviews you schedule can be at a job market meeting or at another physical location, or can be by video.)

Communicate with applicants

At some point you will want to tell some of your applicants that you are rejecting their applications. You can do so flexibly using our message-sending system. See our guide to sending messages to sets of applicants.
